Topping-Out Ceremony for new fire station in Vilvoorde

This month, an important milestone was reached on our project along Koning Boudewijnlaan in Vilvoorde: the topping-out ceremony. In the construction sector, this is a traditional event that takes place once a building has reached its highest point. It is a moment to celebrate the hard work of all partners involved and to look ahead to the completion of the project.

About the project

Commissioned by the City of Vilvoorde, we are building a modern fire station on the corner of Koning Boudewijnlaan and Medialaan. The project is coordinated by the Flemish Brabant West Emergency Services Zone and Haviland, and includes the full realization of the station, including the vehicle hall, training building, and surrounding grounds.

The fire station is designed as a forward-looking and functional building. It consists of a logical layering of functions: reception and intervention, administration, workshops and storage, living areas, and leisure spaces. A double-height internal street forms the connecting element, creating a central axis between the various components and the large vehicle hall, where around 25 fire and ambulance vehicles stand ready for deployment.

The robust wooden structure of the garage, with its large cantilever, makes the space multifunctional and gives the building character. Sustainability, safety, and efficiency are central to the execution of the project, which was carried out through a public tender.

Sustainability in practice

The project places a strong focus on biobased materials: 336 m³ of laminated wooden beams provide a solid structure with low CO₂ emissions. The building will also be equipped with 200 solar panels of 340 Wp each.

Water management has also been addressed intelligently. Rainwater and water from firefighting exercises are collected, filtered, and reused, including for the fire water supply. In this way, the station contributes to more sustainable and self-sufficient operations.

Green buffers between the station and the adjacent residential area provide privacy and tranquility, while nature-inclusive design further enhances the surroundings.

Collaboration and looking ahead

Thanks to all partners and teams who are making the realization of this project possible. Together we are building a fire station that is not only functional and sustainable, but also contributes to the safety and quality of life of the entire community.
