MULTI was developed into an 'Urban Platform'

Multi - Brouckère

In 2019, Cordeel started the sustainable renovation of the famous Brouckère Tower on Anspach Avenue in Brussels, to a design by Conix RDBM Architects. The office tower dating from 1969 was transformed from a dark, black office building into a transparent and inviting 'Urban Platform' that presents itself as a connector for its surroundings. With a surface area of no less than 44,200 m², the building was renamed 'MULTI', referring to the mixed programme with public added value. Because of its circular approach, this project fits perfectly within the Cordeel building vision of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Sustainable construction project

For this renovation project, the construction team aimed for a BREEAM Excellent certification with a maximum amount of recovered materials. For example, the original Belgian blue stone was reused in 'MULTI' and the terrace was laid with 400 recovered granite tiles. In addition, some 1,300 metres of aluminium profiles from the Brouckère tower were used in the balustrades and light fittings of the renovated tower. In addition, maximum insulation, PV panels and heating with heat pumps were chosen.

Just in time

We are proud to have contributed to the redevelopment of this landmark in the heart of Brussels. MULTI is a nice showcase for the group as a one-stop-shop for the entire construction process. C-concrete was responsible for the concrete and metal structures and Imtech was called in for the technical installations (HVAC, sanitary facilities and electricity). C-wood supplied the doors, furniture, post boxes, lockers and walls.

During the construction phase, the challenges posed by 'MULTI' had to be dealt with creatively. A site with limited working space in the heart of Brussels not only requires just-in-time deliveries. We also had to make sure to provide the right quantities of materials on the correct floors each time. We are pleased that we were able to successfully put this complicated puzzle together. The entire renovation took 34 months.
